Lunar New Year Celebrations 2022

We marked Lunar New Year with a series of events, activities and a special celebratory lunch across the Pre-Prep, Prep and Upper School.

The Pre-Prep teamed up with the Percival Library for Lunar New Year stories for Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and 2, read by some of our fantastic pupils from Years 9 to 13. After listening to the stories, the younger pupils turned their hands to terrific Year of the Tiger mask crafting.

Two of our Sixth Form pupils delivered a special assembly for the whole Prep School explaining the stories and traditions around the Lunar New Year Celebrations, there was even a quiz with prizes for those who had listened closely!

A paper lantern competition was run in the Prep School and the Library was decorated by the pupils. We enjoyed making origami tigers, red envelopes, dragon puppets and blossom paintings during popular drop-in craft sessions. Children in the Pre-Prep also created beautiful paper lanterns to help decorate their Library.

On Lunar New Year’s Day, Upper School students had the chance to make paper lanterns using red envelopes. These envelopes are traditionally filled with money and given to friends and family during Lunar New Year, and symbolise good wishes and luck for the coming year. The lanterns were added to the Percival Library’s New Year decorations, which included red and gold streamers and colourful crafty tiger heads which flanked the entrance to the Main Library.

We also held a tutor group tiger fold-along competition with a group prize of Lunar New Year goodies and an individual Best in Show prize for the top tiger of the contest. Tigers are still making their way to the library and the winners will be announced soon.

Boarding House pupils participated in a ‘Bake-off’ event, creating delicious Nian Gao cakes (translated as ‘year cake’ or ‘new year cake’). There were some incredibly creative entries and all participating houses won prizes for their fantastic efforts.

A huge thank you to all our pupils and staff for making these celebrations so special this year! And we wish you all the best for The Year of the Tiger.
