On the 9th of March 2023, Three Clifton College students Olivia, Ishbel and Sophie attended the BANES Youth Climate Conference 2023 at Hayesfield Girls’ School, an event aimed at encouraging young people to become active in the fight against climate change. The conference was attended by students from several schools across the region, who were keen to engage in discussions, workshops, and presentations on environmental issues.

The conference began with an opening address from wildlife filmmakers and eco-anxiety professionals, who shared their experiences of the effects of climate change on wildlife and people. The keynote speakers inspired the students to take up the challenge of protecting the environment, and highlighted the urgency of the issue.

Next, MP Wera Hobhouse and Sustainability Councillor Sarah Warren addressed the audience, sharing their thoughts on how young people can influence policymakers and decision-makers to take action on climate change. They encouraged the students to become leaders in their communities and work towards a sustainable future.

The students then participated in workshops that focused on leadership and planning for the future of the environment with their local council. The workshops provided an opportunity for the students to develop their skills and knowledge on environmental issues and strategies for addressing them. The students also took part in a Forest of Imagination art workshop, where they created artwork based on climate protesting.

As part of the conference, the students from Clifton College delivered a presentation on what their school is doing to become more sustainable. They shared the various initiatives that the school has implemented, including recycling programs and reduced energy consumption. The students’ presentation was well-received.

Finally, the students were given the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas on how their school and the wider community can become more sustainable. They had discussions on ways to reduce carbon emissions, promoting sustainable transportation, and protecting wildlife habitats. The students left the conference with a sense of empowerment and a desire to make a difference in the world.

In conclusion, the BANES Youth Climate Conference 2023 was a great platform for young people to come together and discuss environmental issues. The conference provided students with the opportunity to learn, engage, and collaborate with like-minded individuals on the issue of climate change. The students from Clifton College were enthusiastic and proactive, and their participation in the conference highlights the school’s commitment to sustainability and the role of young people in shaping a better future.
