Pupils enjoy visit from popular novelist Temi Oh

Sci-fi novelist Temi Oh’s visit to Clifton College was out of this world!

Temi began the day with a fantastic talk for Year 11 on Do You Dream of Terra-Two?, her gripping debut novel about a group of exceptional teenagers (much like her audience) who are selected to embark upon a voyage to an Earth-like planet known as Terra-Two, 23 years away from our own.

She treated us to a series of dramatic readings and talked about her journey as a writer and how she went about researching her novel and establishing characters, as well as the challenges of writing from many points of view.

Temi also ran a lively workshop for our Creative Writing group, using a series of famous opening lines and paragraphs to examine how authors grab the attention of their readers. The students loved penning their own opening lines. Here are a few of our favourites, clearly inspired by talk of outer space!

“She did not watch her home world fall away behind the shuttle.”

“I’ve always wondered what it would be like up there, on the Earth.”

“The end of the world started with a piece of toast.”
