David Selwyn prize winner

Every year, the David Selwyn Prize is awarded in association with the Jane Austen Society for essays related to the works of Jane Austen.

This year, candidates were invited to submit a piece of social satire in the form of a short story, of no more than 2,000 words, set in any time period and exploring any theme so long as they use the short story form to highlight and expose social issues.

Entries were received from a range of schools across the Bristol and Bath area and with her story of an innocent peasant girl becoming corrupted by the artificiality of the Versailles court, Isabel Williams in the Upper Sixth took first place. She wins £100 and free membership of the Jane Austen Society.
