Chellaram Sports Complex Wins Prestigious Construction Award
We are proud to announce that Speller Metcalfe has won the ‘Delivering Excellence’ award at the Constructing Excellence South West Awards held on 17th July for their work on our Chellaram Sports Complex.
These awards are among the most respected in the South West’s built environment industry, recognising the projects that go above and beyond in design, delivery and sustainability. This award highlights the success of the Chellaram project in creating a facility that truly delivers on every level.
The Chellaram Sports Complex stands as a model of sustainable development, replacing an energy-intensive inflatable dome with a state of the art sports hall, designed for excellence in performance, sustainability and long-term impact. The facility not only enhances the experience of our pupils and supports professional athlete development, but also provides wider community benefits. Built to BREEAM Excellent standards, the complex features a fabric-first approach, high-performance insulation, and on-site renewable energy.
The Chellaram Sports Complex, located within Clifton College’s Sports Ground at Abbots Leigh, is a key part of the Clifton College sports provision for pupils aged 3 to 18. Set across ninety acres, the site boasts a wide range of first-class facilities, including a 3G football pitch, an Olympic standard 4G hockey pitch, 4 tennis courts, a real tennis court, and two astroturf hockey pitches. In addition to serving the Clifton College community, the Chellaram Sports Complex is also used by local community groups and professional sports clubs, including Team Bath and Gloucestershire Cricket.
Dr Tim Greene, Head of College said, “The Chellaram Sports Complex is a wonderful facility for the College and for the wider community. It provides multiple courts for sports including netball, tennis, basketball and badminton, and has an indoor bouldering wall along with changing room facilities and a reception space. The project was made possible by the hugely generous support of Mr Lal Chellaram, a former pupil of the College, and the Chellaram Foundation.”
We are delighted to see the Chellaram Sports Complex recognised at a regional level and a huge thank you to Speller Metcalfe for creating a space we’re proud to call part of Clifton College.
Earlier this year, the Chellaram Sports Complex was also a finalist for Green Project of the Year at the Education Property Awards, which recognises innovative projects, organisations, and individuals in the education property sector.
