Music Gala 2015

Music Gala 2015

Clifton has a rich and distinguished tradition of achievement in the performing arts.

This was an evening organised as a celebration of some of the more recent musical and theatrical successes from 2010 to the present day.  Under the direction of Karen Pickles (Director of Drama) and Dan Robson (Director of Music) these productions have graced the Redgrave Theatre and established an increasing reputation of outstanding quality and production.

The Black tie event was held at St George’s Bristol (off Park Street), a wonderful auditorium renowned for its fine acoustics.

Twenty four young OCs returned to take part (one travelling from Hong Kong), all had performed in the past productions. They reprised songs from their shows starting with the most recent Chicago - then revisiting Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, Evita and finishing with Les Miserables.  The OCs put on a remarkable show, particularly as some of them had not stepped on a stage since leaving Clifton and they had only one opportunity to rehearse, on the morning of the event.

The evening started with a fizz and canapes reception enjoyed to a background of the school jazz trio, followed by a three course meal during and after which the performances took place, culminating in a full cast finale.  The principals were accompanied throughout the evening by the present school musicians and choir.  The audience of about 135 parents, OCs and friends were royally entertained.  A special treat was the ‘last minute’ appearance from Julia Hwang who played a marvellous segway of well-known show tunes, accompanied by James Drinkwater.  The evening was a triumph and will live long in the memory.

Clifton at its very best and the proceeds from the event go towards a Performing Arts Bursary.

We are indebted to the past pupils who returned to perform and the support of both the drama and music departments.
