The English Department aims to help pupils develop spoken word skills; fluency in fiction and non-fiction; an enjoyment of literature, including novels, plays, short stories and poetry; research and library skills, and the ability to produce a range of writing, appropriate to purpose and audience.

Handwriting, grammar, spelling and punctuation are all integral to our curriculum. We aim to develop a thorough grounding in core literacy skills, to set a foundation for future learning.

Why Study at Clifton College?

We use reading journals to keep track of the private reading done by each pupil, and arrange opportunities for all years to listen to visiting storytellers and poets.

We continue to encourage pupils to read regularly and give them every opportunity to evaluate their preferences and communicate their enthusiasm orally or in various forms of written response.
