From 8-15 August, Clifton College took the Edinburgh Festival Fringe by storm, bringing a fast-paced, inventive production of The 39 Steps (Abridged) to theSpace Triplex. Following a long and exciting journey to Scotland and a focused technical rehearsal on 9 August, the ensemble delivered six dynamic performances throughout the week.
The production received a fantastic 4-star review, sold out two performances, and welcomed more than 500 audience members across its run.
Reviewers praised the production as a "true ensemble play" that filled a rare niche at the Fringe, celebrating the magic of live theatre through inventive physical performance, shadow puppetry, slapstick comedy, and imaginative staging. Particular praise was given to the company's unified vision and the cast's complete commitment to their eccentric characters.
Beyond the stage, pupils fully immersed themselves in the festival experience, spending hours flyering along the bustling Royal Mile and engaging with audiences from around the world.
The week provided invaluable exposure to the breadth of live performance on offer at the Fringe, from circus and stand-up comedy to physical theatre and contemporary drama. The company also attended a range of professional productions, including: Showstopper! The Improvised Musical, Trainspotting Live, Dracula: Lucy's Dream, Surreally Good and By a Thread.
Special thanks go to Mr Mancuso for organising the trip, Miss Joseph for her outstanding direction in adapting our May production for the Edinburgh stage. Mr Moore and Becca for their tireless support with costumes and set design.
The week was an unforgettable celebration of ensemble talent, creativity, and theatrical grit. Clifton College is already looking forward to returning to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a new production in 2028 (with another exciting trip under wraps in between)!
