Over 30 pupils - soloists, duos and bands, from Years 9-13 - performed in our third annual Black History Month Open Mic Night on 1st October.
Whilst pupils were free to choose their own items, they were encouraged to select music linked to the rich diversity of Black musical traditions. In that vein, it was great to see songs by legendary musicians Lenny Kravitz, Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder (his collaboration with pioneering African-American jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby 'If it's magic') featuring alongside numbers by artists of various other heritages drawing inspiration from R&B and gospel (Mulaa Jones), the Blues (The Animals), Avant-Garde Jazz (Radiohead) and 1960s Motown girl groups (Bananarama).
Assistant Head EDIB, Géraldine Maringo, opened the evening by saying: "It is once again a real privilege to welcome so many talented artists to launch Black History Month at Clifton. This event grows each year, and we hope it will continue to be one of our most memorable celebrations at the College. Many thanks to all the artists involved and to the Upper Music department for their superb organisation."
A huge well done to all the performers for a fantastic evening of music celebrating Black History!
