The Year 9 enrichment trip to Tignes returned for a third year, designed to prepare pupils for the start of their GCSE studies next term.
Preparation began several weeks before departure, with a series of tailored activities aimed at developing the characteristics needed both for the Alps and for the academic challenges ahead. Pupils visited Hinkley Point to learn about evolving energy‑generation practices, including hydroelectric power, which they would later explore in the Alps. Additional visits included sessions on regenerative farming and sustainable food journeys at Nempnett Pastures and the Jolly Hog, as well as trips to Airbus and Aerospace Bristol.
Once prepared and packed, the cohort set off early by coach to London before boarding the Eurostar to France. Over several action‑packed days, pupils took part in high ropes, mountain hiking, fishing and pedaloing, with some even braving a refreshing dip in the Alpine waters.
During their time in the mountains, the group visited the awe‑inspiring Glacier Grande Motte, the highest point in the Tignes resort, where they observed firsthand the effects of climate change. A smaller group trekked through the mountains to a traditional refuge, spending the night before beginning a 6am descent illuminated by sunrise as they rejoined their peers.
The experience was conducted almost entirely screen‑free, allowing pupils to fully immerse themselves in the natural world and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and one another.
The character of the Year 9 cohort was exemplary throughout. They returned with unforgettable memories, strengthened confidence and new skills that will support them as they begin their GCSE journey.
