Bristol Festival of Latin Drama

Monday 18 August 2025

Today was the first time that Clifton College participated at the Bristol Festival of Latin Drama at Bristol Grammar School. Clifton College was proud to be the only school who managed to run both a Junior and the Senior Team.

The Juniors performed an elaborate Latin version of the story of Little Red Riding Hood, Parva Paenula Purpurea, and won the third prize. Pupils played with incredible energy and enthusiasm, overcoming their fears of playing in front of a sizable audience of Classicists. The judge commented on the overall well-coordinated performance and great acting. Our historical costumes gave the play a real antique vibe. We must recognise the enormous contribution from our Classics graduate, Izzy, who prepared the script, organised and led the rehearsals and prepared neatly all the costumes.

The Year 9 Senior Team prepared the eternal Classics love story from Ovid (and Shakespeare), Pyramus and Thisbe, which was highly commended by the judge. A superb play with many exquisite individual acts. The judge mentioned the excellent Latin diction, brilliant Latin script and the spirited performance by the two tragic lovers. I want to express my enormous gratitude to Libby, who took on the role of director, and undertook the enormous task of preparing the script, managing the cast, finding time for the rehearsals and supporting everyone with humour and care.

This was the first time that Clifton College attended the Bristol Festival of Latin Drama and we hope that we will build on today's amazing experience and come back with even better performances next year.
