The long standing benefits offered by Performing Arts at Clifton College

Clifton College has long recognised the transformative power of the Performing Arts, weaving music and drama into the very fabric of its educational experience. More than just co-curricular activities, these disciplines are viewed as essential components in the development of well-rounded individuals, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the arts that extends far beyond the stage or concert hall. The benefits found through participation in Clifton's vibrant Performing Arts programme are not merely transient skills, but rather deeply ingrained qualities that shape character and prepare students for success in the world. We hope that our Performing Arts offer is helping our pupils to be happier, kinder and more inquisitive humans, and we try to have a brilliant time along the way.

Whether a student is navigating the complexities of a character or mastering a challenging musical passage, these disciplines cultivate not just talent, but character. The collaborative nature of theatre demands communication, compromise, and a shared commitment to a common goal. The dedication required to perfect a piece of music builds discipline and perseverance, and the act of performing, of sharing artistic expression with an audience, fosters self-belief and resilience. These experiences shape individuals who are not only creative and expressive, but also well-rounded, and full of integrity and determination.

Performance thrives across our entire campus. From the joyful shrieks of Pre-Prep students learning a new song for their Friday morning sharing, to the wild and passionate chants of pride during a house song performance, the arts are celebrated here. Whether it's a virtuoso student recital, a rehearsal for a large-scale musical at our very own Redgrave Theatre, one of the many band nights, theatre showcases, or just an impromptu sing at the end of term, we cherish and celebrate every artistic expression.

It was a privilege to recently meet a new cohort of Year 8 students during their taster day in the Upper School. As part of a session I ran with them, I asked about their hopes for the future and their favourite memories from the Pre-Prep and Prep School. Unsurprisingly, experiences in drama and music were at the top of their lists.

I often talk about the idea of a cultural backpack, where a young person can add an experience to their bank of cultural understanding. This is what we aim to do at Clifton: provide experiences of creativity and collaboration, which, in turn, will form a bedrock of confidence and resilience, shaping not just musicians and actors, but well-rounded individuals ready to embrace the world.

I guarantee that when these students leave, it will be the role they had in their first play, or the time they played in the orchestra's concert, that will stay with them. These moments, these triumphs, these shared gasps of breath in a theatre or the soaring crescendo of their house’s voices joined as one, these are the memories that will shape them, define them, and stay with them.
