A Holistic Approach to Safeguarding at Clifton College

Tuesday 14 October 2025

At Clifton College, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. We believe in a holistic approach that considers the whole child, ensuring their safety, wellbeing, and development across all aspects of school life. This commitment is reflected in our comprehensive policies, dedicated staff, and a culture of vigilance and safety.

Our safeguarding strategy is not confined to a single department or individual. It is woven into the fabric of our community, involving every member of staff, from teachers and Housemasters/Mistresses to support staff and the Senior Leadership Team. We understand that safeguarding is a shared responsibility, and everyone plays a crucial role in creating a safe and nurturing environment.

We take a proactive approach to safeguarding, focusing on prevention and early intervention. We provide regular training for all staff to recognise signs of distress or abuse and to understand their responsibilities in reporting concerns. Our pastoral care system ensures that each pupil has a dedicated support network, including house staff, tutors, and counsellors, who are readily available to offer guidance and support.

Our holistic approach encompasses several key elements:

  • Pastoral Care: We provide a strong pastoral support system, with dedicated staff who build positive relationships with pupils and provide guidance and support.

  • Training and Awareness: We ensure all staff receive regular safeguarding training and are aware of their responsibilities in protecting pupils.

  • Policies and Procedures: Our policies are reviewed annually as a minimum and the College will review its processes regularly to ensure they are aligned with best practice

  • Communication and Collaboration: We foster open communication and collaboration between staff, pupils, parents, and external agencies to ensure a coordinated approach to safeguarding.

  • Pupil Voice: We actively listen to pupils' views and concerns, empowering them to speak up and seek help when needed.

  • Mental Health and Wellbeing: We recognise the importance of mental health and wellbeing and provide access to counselling and support services for pupils.

We are committed to creating an environment where every pupil feels safe, valued, and supported. Our holistic approach to safeguarding ensures that we are not only protecting pupils from harm but also promoting their overall wellbeing and development, preparing them for their future in a rapidly changing modern world.
