We enjoyed a packed day of events and activities to mark World Book Day 2019. Our special guest was Vanessa Kisuule, Bristol City Poet 2018-2020. Vanessa, who is known for her engaging performance poetry, was has won many prestigious poetry slams and performed her work all over the world.
Vanessa addressed the whole school during morning Chapel service, performing a selection of her poems and speaking passionately about the power of poetry and about careers in the arts. Year 9 and 10 continued the World Book Day celebration during the morning with longer talks that covered topics including identity, language, social media, ASOS dungarees and dinosaurs!
Vanessa also found time to host the notoriously challenging World Book Day Literature Quiz final. After many years in the shadows, the teachers’ team stormed to victory against formidable opponents Hallward’s House. All the contestants displayed incredible literary knowledge, wowing the audience with literary knowledge from Homer to Harry Potter. Well done to Ms Hawkins, Mrs John, Mr Callander and Mr Harris! A special mention must go to Ms Hawkins and Mrs John whose commitment to World Book Day quizzing was so strong that they both took a break from Maternity Leave to take part!
Students also enjoyed a literary critter hunt, searching for famous animals from literature (like Joey from War Horse and Tigger from Winnie-the-Pooh), which had been hiddenaround the school. Prizes were on offer for those who could correctly identify the book in which the animal featured. Thank you to the student librarians for their help in decorating the glittery critters!
