Clifton College's STEM Society, made up of five Lower Sixth students, performed a test launch of a model rocket they have been building since January 2019.
This was in preparation for the UK Youth Rocketry Competition which is to be held at Abbeyfield School in Chippenham on the 27th April 2019.
The team have been working incredibly hard on designing and manufacturing a rocket which meets the criteria of the competition and, as such, have had to input dimensions and other variables into a computer software modelling system to predict the height and duration of flight.
The rocket ignited successfully and took off vertically, however, the parachute system failed to deploy properly. The team now need to consider the positioning of the motors, which provide the thrust for their rocket, and will need to look for sponsorship in order to secure funding for extra parts.
The team are certainly making some headway with this and we look forward to seeing how they do at the SW regional final competition, which is coming up soon!
