The Governor's Cup is the oldest school boy fixture in England, first played in 1864. Clifton College were the current holders of the Governors Cup, which was first played for in 1964, however, Clifton 1st XV suffered their first defeat to old adversaries Marlborough in Saturday's fixture.
Clifton were leading 7 -3, following a Ioan Lloyd try and conversion. However, Marlborough's dominant pack had taken control by half time and Marlborough lead at the break 11 - 7. With a strong wind behind them, Marlborough managed to find another gear and as Clifton faded Marlborough made the most of their chances.
Clifton's long injury list may have been a factor in the comprehensive manner of their defeat, but Marlborough were well drilled and very motivated to win the cup, with a final score of 30 - 7, for the first time for four years.
