'Big Side' teams wrap up a successful season

The annual 'Big Side' black tie dinner took place at the Clifton Club for both boys and girls who have played in the top Rugby and Hockey teams for Clifton this season. There was lots to celebrate on both sides.

For the boys, a season that began in the bright August Alpine sunshine of Tignes for the 1st and 2nd XV’s, ended in low December sunshine on The Close. The season was an excellent one for the 2nd XV, who bonded superbly. The team played 9 matches, won 7, drew one and lost one. The team are mostly lower 6th, which is very promising for next season. The selection of the top two sides at Clifton will be competitive. The 2nd XV team are currently 5th in the South West Divisional League and 12th nationally.

The 1st XV were unbeaten on their home pitch during 2017 and finished in 8th position in the Daily Mail Merit League, the 3rd consecutive year in the UK's top 10 of the top 100 independent schools who play in the competition.

The girls 1st XV Hockey team finished in a respectable top 8 position in the South West. They enjoyed a great season, captained brilliantly by Annie Wooler and Louisa Bell. The 2nd XV were one match short of an unbeaten season, after some fantastic play and determination throughout the Michaelmas term.

Congratulations to Ioan Lloyd who has been selected to play Rugby for the Welsh U18 squad.
