Colour A Child's Life

Back in January 2015, Nick Haigh, Bristol’s Volunteer Coordinator for the charity Kid’s Company, came to the Prep School to talk about a new scheme Colour a Child's Life. Volunteers help to transform the homes of some of our most disadvantaged families, who often live without basic necessities, such as clean bedding, crockery and simple furniture.

A group of volunteers, Nick explained, undertake a DIY SOS-style make over. The results are direct and immediate, giving children a clean, bright, positive place to live. The family is then helped with appropriate maintenance.

In May, a group of parents and children, led by Mansfield's Housemistress Shannon Schrijver, redecorated and carpeted a flat in Bristol.

Mrs Schrijver writes, 'On behalf of Stacey, Kids Company, and Clifton, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all of your time and efforts today. This was a huge task, painting the whole flat, skirting boards and all - as well as getting the whole flat laid with carpet!
Although it was a very long day, our efforts will make a difference for Stacey and her family for the future - Stacey was thrilled with her new home and her little boy was over the moon when he saw his room! He loved the toys! Stacey mentioned that what we achieved was better than she ever expected so thank you. '
This is the second of such workdays, and follows a similarly successful Colour a Child's Life redecoration made in March.
