Year 7 Go Butterfly Crazy - 16 September 2014

Butterfly Ceramics 4During the second week of term Year 7 pupils spent their art lesson visiting the butterfly house at Bristol Zoo. There they they learned about the life cycle of the butterfly and completed observational sketches in preparation for a glazing workshop with visiting artist Julia Davey.

On 16th September, Bath based ceramicist Julia visited Clifton College to work with Year 7 pupils on glazing techniques. Each teaching group completed a half day workshop, where they were taught the ‘scraffito’ technique used by professional ceramicists. Each pupil painted coloured slip on to bowls, tiles and plates and then scratched into this with lines to create the pattern and detail found in their butterfly drawings. The students produced a variety of beautiful butterfly inspired tiles, plates and bowls.
